We want to inform you about an important update from Microsoft that may affect how some of you are currently using Microsoft Teams. As of the end of June this year, Microsoft will no longer support the Teams application on Windows Server 2016. This change means that any Teams application running on this server environment will no longer receive updates or support, which could affect functionality and security.
What This Means for You:
- Teams Web Alternative: For those of you using Teams primarily for chat functionality, the web version of Microsoft Teams will remain available and fully supported. This alternative ensures continued access to essential communication tools without needing the full desktop application.
- Limitations of Teams for Web: It’s important to note that the web version of Teams does not support advanced features like high-quality video and audio calls. We understand that the experience of these features in a hosted desktop server environment has not been optimal, and this limitation may not impact many of our users.
- Identifying Impact: We are currently in the process of identifying which of our customers are using the full Teams application in their desktop server environments. This process is slightly complicated by the fact that while Teams may be installed, it might not be actively used by all end-users.
Looking Ahead – Modern Work Solutions:
This change is a good prompt for those who have not yet started, to consider moving to a more modern work environment. Upgrading to newer technologies not only enhances features and security but also aligns with the ongoing shifts in digital workplaces. For those already transitioning to modern workspace solutions, this change will likely have minimal impact. We are here to support you in this transition and can provide guidance on how best to adjust your setup to continue using Microsoft Teams effectively, including moving to newer server versions or exploring different collaborative tools that meet your business needs.
